Intro to Wool Workshop

This month's workshop on Sunday 21st is all about the wonderful fibre that the Western District is famous for: WOOL!

From 2-5pm you'll meet Sarah Klobe from Strength Honour Wares, who is super passionate about all things wool, creating knitwear and crochet accessories, plus selling hand dyed yarn, wool, tops, roving and fibre. Don't know what all these woolly wonderful things are? Come along for a relaxed afternoon and find out!

Sarah will shed light on the journey of wool from sheep to shawl (do people still wear shawls!?), and introduce you to a variety of fibres, both animal and plant based, explaining their different uses.

Sarah will demonstrate how to spin on the most basic of tools consisting of little more than a stick, hook, and wooden round. She will then take it up a level to the age-old spinning wheel, with its pioneer charm, which is pretty mesmerising to watch!

We will then dip in to the addictive world of dyeing- Sarah will showcase several methods of dyeing both fibre and yarn and then it is time to get your hands dirty (not really) and DIY!

After suiting up in gloves and aprons, you will get to dye up your very own skein of 17 micron chunky yarn! Then we can chat, enjoy some hot drinks, cake, fruit and homemade biscuits, and try your hand at spinning! Have a go on both the drop spindle and the spinning wheel and see if you prefer the traditional method or the super-portable drop spindle (which Sarah will have available for purchase if you're hooked).

So now you have your very own hand dyed yarn, what do you do with it? Keep your eyes peeled for a future Crafternoon where Sarah will teach you to knit a scarf out of your own creation, woolderful!
