Intro to Pottery Crafternoons

We're excited to announce our first ever two-part workshop, Intro to Pottery, running over two subsequent weekends; Sunday 24th September and Sunday 1st October 2017, 1-4pm!

We will be taking over the beautiful pottery studio in the Hamilton Institute of Rural Learning; a bright space surrounded by flowers, native grasses and organic veggie patches and bordered by a lovely nature reserve- look out for bandicoots and be inspired by the great outdoors!

Our tutor will be HIRL's resident ceramic artist and teacher; Julie Love, who not only teaches regular pottery classes (which I can personally attest to) but sells her work in Hamilton's wonderful MUD Gallery- well worth a look!

In the first session you’ll create a range of small items from earthenware or terracotta clay and learn the basic techniques used in hand-building pottery. This includes preparing your clay, rams head wedging, using the pinch method to create an adorable little curved bowl, using the slab method to build a rustic plate, and using the coil method to build a mini vessel of your choosing. Vase, pen-pot, shot glass- the options are endless, but often you’re at the mercy of the clay, so it’s best to just go with it!

In the second session your creations will have been bisque fired once in the kiln, and so are ready to glaze. You’ll be able to use a variety of glaze colours and finishes to add designs to your pottery, ready for their final firing. You’ll also get the chance to try your hand on a pottery wheel if that tickles your fancy- you won’t be able to take any wheel-thrown items home, but you’ll learn how to throw pottery and work your magic- just remember to wear old clothes as this is messy!

Julie will fire your glazed pieces in the kiln and they’ll be ready for you to collect early October- you’ll be so excited to see how they turned out!

The cost is $55 per 3-hour workshop- so $110 total for the two-week course. Each workshop includes tea, coffee and sweet treats on arrival, all tools, materials and tuition.

This workshop is limited to 8 participants, so booking is essential!

If you’re keen to attend you must be able to come along to both halves of the workshop on subsequent weekends- 24th Sept and 1st Oct, from 1-4pm, and will need to pay in full when booking your place.

If you cancel less than 48 hours before the first workshop or cannot attend the second we unfortunately won’t be able to refund your place, but you’d be welcome to send a friend along instead!

Email mycrafternoons@gmail.com to book and for details on how to pay and confirm your place.

See you there for some tea-quaffing ceramic-building fun!
