Spring Flower Painting Workshop

September 7, 2018

Spring has FINALLY sprung here in Western Victoria, and to celebrate a rise in temperatures and spirits, we're going to hold a very special Crafternoon Collab!

We’re thrilled to be spending a Sunday afternoon in the leafy HIRL complex, learning to paint watercolour flowers with the lovely Rachel Zuch.

Rach is a freelance textile designer originally from Kiama on the NSW coast, who specializes in beautiful watercolour floral designs. Though her career has seen her largely based in Sydney working for brands like Billabong, Jets Swimwear and Marcs, and even being featured in Harper's Bazaar, luckily for us she has relocated to Hamilton with her partner Andrew - win!

Combine Rach's training in Design, Fashion, Textiles and Fabric Printing with a dash of her lovely personality, lots of experience in painting and visual arts and add a dollop of her huge passion for flowers and foliage, and we have ourselves a recipe for a wonderful Crafternoons tutor!

Rach has actually taught a crafternoon before, where we learnt the Japanese the-dye art of Shibori (blog post here). It was such fun we thought we'd return to the same location at the Hamilton Institute of Rural Learning, which we just love for it's beautiful gardens, pottery studio and light-filled spaces.

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners, but will still be fun for those who have wielded a paintbrush previously! We will start with some painting exercises to cover some basics like colour mixing, how to hold and use your brushes, use of water and ways to apply the pigment.

We’ll then observe fresh flowers (yay) and learn how to simplify and capture the shapes and colours of the flowers, experimenting with the water and paint to create loose abstract floral paintings.

Everyone will take home a finished flower painting on good quality paper, ready to frame and display at home!

We’ll have teas and coffees on the go all afternoon, and some afternoon tea treats to keep us fuelled.

You also get to KEEP your paint pan set AND four different sized paintbrushes so you can continue your painting journey at home!

The workshop costs $70 per person including all materials, tools, tuition and afternoon tea. Places are limited to allow for some one-on-one guidance within our sociable crafty crew. To book, email and you’ll receive details of how to pay to confirm your booking.

If something comes up and you need to cancel, you can do so 48 hours before the workshop and receive a full refund, but less than that and you’re welcome to send a friend along in your place instead!
